How Auto-Generated Scheduling Prioritizes Back-to-Back Shifts

When using SubItUp’s auto-generation tool, the system considers multiple factors when assigning shifts—not just fairness in distributing hours.

How Scheduling Decisions Are Made

While distributing hours evenly among staff is important, the system also prioritizes efficiency in scheduling. One key factor is placing employees into back-to-back shifts, as long as their maximum hours per day allow it.

This means employees who are available for consecutive shifts may be scheduled more frequently than those whose availability is more limited or spread out.

Example Scenario

If an employee is available for multiple shifts but not for consecutive (back-to-back) shifts, they may receive fewer total hours. This is because the system favors assigning employees to longer, continuous blocks of time when possible.

Adjusting Scheduling Behavior

If you prefer to prioritize even distribution of shifts over back-to-back scheduling, you can adjust your settings:

  • Reduce each employee’s maximum hours per day to match the length of a single shift (for example, 2 hours).

  • This prevents the system from grouping shifts together and encourages a more balanced distribution across staff.
